Dan is a closeted dad stuck between knowing the truth about himself and not wanting to lose his family. He and his wife, Teresa, are in the middle of a trial separation when the kids request the family take a trip together to a 5-star AirBnb on the central coast.
There, Dan sees the apparition of their host's late mother and finds her glasses. Though the host treats them like family, her anti gay views make Dan tense and he's concerned her mother's watchful presence knows his secret.
Driving away, Dan gives a bad review, but must return for his insulin, left in the fridge. The host confronts him but Dan refuses to pull the review. During the ride back, his blood sugars climb to terrifying levels, nearly killing him. It turns out that refrigerator froze and destroyed his insulin.
Did the spirit do it? Teresa won't believe it. And though more accidents unfold, Dan himself isn't sure until he gets home and finds the spirit's glasses in his luggage.
He reaches out to a spiritualist who believes the specter has attached and is feeding off the family’s dysfunction and Dan's secret. The only way to force it out is to tackle these things and starve it. Despite their brokenness, the family tries to tap into the love they have but when Dan loses his job and Teresa’s apartment burns down, Dan realizes he must do what he most dreads.
The host and her mother are a step ahead, outing him online and to his family. Dan, on the brink of a breakdown, is possessed and driven to kill himself.
It’s only through his family stopping him and their surprise acceptance of his sexuality that turns the tide. Together, they rally around Dan as he burns those glasses. But it’s his redemption and their imperfect love for each other that ultimately drives the Late Bakovic away.
