Dan is a closeted diabetic father in the middle of a trial separation he doesn’t want. His wife, Teresa, has been shutting him out, and his teen daughter, Charlie, and young son, Geo, are all he feels he has left. At Charlie’s request, the family takes a trip to a coastal Airbnb, and Dan pins his hopes on using the vacation to win them back. But the rental is owned by Reeny Baković, an intrusive host whose homophobic opinions and constant meddling quickly sour the trip. When Dan glimpses the apparition of Reeny’s late mother and discovers the old woman’s glasses hidden in a drawer, his unease hardens into dread. The presence in the house seems to watch him, and Dan becomes convinced it somehow knows his secret.
After a tense stay, Dan leaves a harsh review and the family heads home—until he realizes he’s forgotten his insulin in the Airbnb’s fridge. When he returns to retrieve it and drives back, his blood sugar spikes catastrophically; the refrigerator has frozen and destroyed his insulin, nearly killing him. Teresa dismisses his fear that the spirit sabotaged him, and even Dan doubts himself—until he unpacks at home and finds the dead woman’s glasses in his luggage. Seeking help, he turns to his friend Elara, who believes the revenant has attached to him and is feeding off his shame. To starve it, she says, Dan will have to face the very fears he’s spent his life hiding from. Instead, paralyzed by the risk of losing his family, he hesitates.
The Late Baković tightens her grip. Able to affect the physical world, influence people, and subtly manipulate technology, the spirit orchestrates a campaign to dismantle Dan’s life: costing him his job, deepening the rift with Teresa, burning down her apartment, targeting the kids, and ultimately revealing his secret to Charlie. As Dan reels from the fallout, the revenant exposes him online to everyone he knows, driving him toward a breakdown and carefully arranging circumstances for him to kill himself. When he can’t go through with it, she possesses him to finish the job. In a terrifying climax, Teresa and the children fight to save him, barely surviving the ordeal. Only then does Dan see that the ghost’s power is rooted in his refusal to face himself. When the truth finally comes out—that he’s bisexual—the family is forced to confront the years of secrecy, with Charlie the most hurt at having carried the weight of her father’s burden. Through Dan’s painful honesty, Charlie’s hard-won support, and the family’s imperfect love, they rally around him as he destroys the glasses and banishes the Late Baković for good.
